How Do I Move Everything From Windows 10 to a New Windows 11 PC? You bought a new Windows 11 computer. Now comes the part nobody looks forward to:How do you make the new computer feel like the old one? Most people don't just have a folder of documents they need to copy. Your old computer may contain years of photos, documents, email, browser bookmarks, saved settings, financial records and programs you still use every day.The most important thing to understand is that moving your files and moving your entire computer are not the same thing.Don't erase or get rid of your old computer yet This is the most important advice we can give you.Keep your old computer intact until you've used the new computer long enough to know everything important made it over.Don't factory-reset it. Don't trade it in yet. Don't start deleting files because you think they've already transferred.Your old computer is your safety net.Start with your personal files For most Windows users, important files can be found in places such as:Desktop Documents Downloads Pictures Videos Music But don't stop there. You may also have important folders somewhere else on the computer or on another drive. Programs such as QuickBooks, Quicken, Outlook, genealogy software, photo programs and other specialized applications may store important information in their own locations. If you've created folders such as C:\Customer Files, D:\Photos or C:\My Projects, those need to be considered too. What about OneDrive? OneDrive can make this confusing. Some of the files you see on your computer may actually be synchronized with Microsoft's cloud service. Some may be physically stored on the computer, while others may be cloud-only files that Windows downloads when you open them. Before assuming everything is safely transferred, make sure you understand where your files actually are.The same principle applies if you use other cloud-storage services.Cloud synchronization can be useful, but it isn't necessarily the same thing as migrating your entire computer.Your programs are different from your files This is where many PC transfers become frustrating. You generally cannot copy a program's folder from the old computer to the new computer and expect the program to work.An installed Windows application may depend on much more than the files you see in Program Files. It can also rely on Windows Registry information, shared components, services, runtimes, fonts, configuration files, user settings and other dependencies. When the original installer is available, reinstalling the correct version of the application on the new PC is often the safest approach. But there's another problem. What if you don't have the installer anymore? This happens frequently with older software.Maybe you purchased the program 10 or 15 years ago. Perhaps the company no longer offers that version. You might not have the original CD, download or product information anymore.Don't remove the program from the old computer. Before doing anything, determine exactly what version you have and whether you still have legitimate licensing or activation information available.Depending on the application, moving an existing installation may be possible, difficult or sometimes impractical. Every application is different. And if the program uses licensing or activation, moving it does not mean its licensing requirements can be bypassed. The software may legitimately require activation again on the new computer.Don't forget your browser Your browser can contain a surprising amount of your everyday computer life:bookmarks, favorites, extensions, browsing settings, saved logins and open tabs.If you're signed into Chrome, Edge, Firefox or another browser with synchronization enabled, some of this information may come back after signing into the new computer.Still, verify it before assuming everything has returned.Email deserves special attention If you use webmail such as Gmail through a browser, your mail normally lives with the online service.Desktop email applications can be different. For example, Outlook may contain local archives or PST files. Other email programs may maintain locally stored messages, contacts or settings. If years of important email exist on the old computer, make sure that information has been accounted for before retiring it.Don't forget financial and business data If you use your computer for a business or your finances, take extra care with applications such as:QuickBooks, Quicken, tax software, genealogy programs, accounting programs and specialty business software. The program itself and the data you've created with that program are two separate things.Successfully installing QuickBooks on the new computer, for example, doesn't automatically mean your company data came with it.Identify and back up the data before changing anything on the old PC.What about printers and Windows settings? Your new Windows 11 computer will normally obtain many hardware drivers through Windows Update or directly from the hardware manufacturer. That's generally preferable to copying hardware drivers from the old computer.Printers may need to be added again, particularly older models or devices with manufacturer-specific software.Windows preferences, personalization and application settings are another matter. Some synchronize through Microsoft accounts, some belong to individual programs, and others may need to be recreated. How do you know the transfer actually worked? This is the part people often skip.Verify it.Don't stop at:“It looks like everything copied.” Open some photos.Open important documents.Check your Desktop and Documents.Launch the programs you depend on.Open your browser and check your bookmarks.Check your email.Open your accounting or financial data.Print something if your printer matters to you.A successful transfer isn't just copying data. It's proving that the things you depend on work on the new computer.A simple rule to remember When moving from Windows 10 to a new Windows 11 computer, think:Copy → Verify → Then move on.And keep the old computer unchanged until you're comfortable that the new one has everything you need. Why Aurora Care is working on this problem At Aurora Care, we've seen the same frustration repeatedly:“I don't want a different computer. I just want my new computer to work like my old one.” That's why we're developing Aurora Care: Move.Move is being designed to help make a new Windows 11 computer feel like the computer you're replacing—not simply copy a Documents folder. Our goal includes personal files, supported applications, application settings, browsers, email data and other important parts of your computer life, with verification afterward. We're also putting particular attention into older, legitimately installed software. If an older program works perfectly for you, we don't think the first answer should automatically be, “Go buy the newest version.”Where technically and legally possible, Move will attempt to preserve what you already have.Aurora Care: Move is currently in development.Until then, our biggest advice is simple:Don't erase your old PC. Keep it intact until you know your files, programs and important information are safely working on the new one.
